My Wild Before & After Experiment with Vulnerable Photos

One of the biggest challenges of living an effective fitness lifestyle is making it work in modern day life. Over the years, I’ve discovered some subtle but powerful keys to make this work. One of these keys is the ability to ‘fluctuate’ throughout the year - in a healthy and balanced way. See, this allows us to stay in a ‘fit range’ - instead of one absolute state of physical fitness. For example - in the high Summer, I usually weigh in at 129 Lbs - and maybe 9% body-fat. Keep in mind, I’m 5’2”, when you’re thinking about that 129 Lbs (far from “too skinny”)... And in the middle of Winter - which is what it is right now - (yes it gets a bit “cold” in North Florida) - I usually go “up” in weight - to about 134 Lbs - and maybe around 13.5% body-fat... I took the 2 BEFORE photos below, AND measurements, just a few hours ago. (Please take notice of the "old-school $5 sweats" which I am working hard at bringing back into style). [caption id="attachment_863" align="alignnone" width="838" caption="March 2013 - at 43yo some of those awesome white hairs come out at mid-chest"]joey winter march 2013[/caption] [caption id="attachment_864" align="alignnone" width="775" caption="March 2013 - look at that crazy hair swirl in the middle!"]joey winter 2013 back view[/caption] Now that 5 Lbs might not seem like a lot - BUT, when you see the difference (in about 6 weeks) it may look dramatic. I’m doing this NOW, because it looks like this will be the last, or one of the last, “cold” weekends here in North Florida... And once it starts to warm up and daylight time gets longer each day - I tend to be outdoors and more active - more often - especially on the weekends when the kids want to be on the beach... What naturally happens is what creates the change you’re going to see when I post the “after” photos in April or May... You’ll benefit from this in several ways - some of which won’t be evident until I post the ‘after’ photos. Here comes part of my point: Without my light Summer tan - and with all my Italian body hair grown in to keep me warm during the Winter - my physique looks VERY different. Different people will use different words to describe this difference - Feel free to post your comments, thoughts or questions in the box below this post. Over the next few weeks and months - I’m going to share the things I do as Spring/Summer gets closer - and I make slight adjustments to drop the Winter body-fat - and also “lose” the layer of upper-body hair that can feel like a sweater if left unshaven in the warmer seasons. NOTE - if you have any personal experience or insights on the subject of laser hair removal, PLEASE share below as it is something I am considering for my upper body. (I did try waxing about 20 years ago - and IT WAS FREAKING TORTURE.. enough said there :-) One thing I’ll be doing is trying at least 9 of the recipes from the Unleash Your Thin recipe books that I bought a few days ago - I just got the whole package today. Here’s a photo I took today right before I took the shirtless photos above.
UYT Recipes and program
I got the U.Y.T. whole package - digital version and the 3 books and CD’s. For the average person this is GOLD material. For me - the recipe book alone is priceless because it give me more variations of what I already do - but it saves me lots of time, energy and guesswork - and the kids LOVE these types of recipes too... Life get’s easier :-) Post your comments below - and STAY TUNED for my detailed “transformation” updates and photos over the next few weeks and months... My "after" photos are going to be pretty cool... And, there will be priceless lessons, tactics and strategies for you to pull from the events that are going to be unfolding from now - until it's time to post the afters... On paper, the changes won't be drastic - but to the eye - they will be quite dramatic. The same can be true for you too. Your trainer for life, - Joey Atlas

I happen to like men with hairy chests. I don’t know what this hairless obsession is lately. The physique is what matters.

  • Acabarbie

    I agree with you Lynn,
There is nothing sexier than a man with a hairy chest. Men with hairless bodies are well…..women!
I cannot be attracted to a hairless body!!!!

  • Tamranason

    Really like the pictures.

  • Pat Melia

    Good Pics Joey..

  • Hanna-Marika

Looking good, Joey!! I like the hair too! Your physique looks good too, you don’t have to go lower in body fat either. By the way, your smile is wonderful

  • Rangiocarroll

Its your body, if you are happy with the hair you keep it. Everyone has a different ideal. I like hairless men, thats because the men in my culture dont have chest or back hair.

  • Amanda

Its your choice what you want to do with your chest & back hair! I know a lot of men feel less confident with a lot of hair but you have that in abundance 🙂 confidence I mean! 🙂
Plus hairy men are WAY better in bed in my experience! 🙂
Be careful if you do want to go down the laser route. My boyfriend has same problem as you & tried laser hair removal 2 years ago (£2000!) – the laser burns caused painful ingrowing hairs & the hair grew back really quickly – very disappointing for him – but it might not be the case for all men! Think you have to choose the right therapist…
He tried waxing – ouch that made him bleed 🙁 Now we’re gonna go down the veet hair removal route and occasional shaving – he feels embarrassed about me helping him but I just want to see him happy & confident in his own body! 🙂 I dont mind the hair – but he does so….
Good luck with whatever you decide! 🙂

  • Sanflorelo2

I prefer men with body hair, and yours is great, but its a matter of what is it how makes you feel happier with or without hair. I bet because you live in Florida you want to be hairless .
You have a great smile and look awesome now, with less weigh it really shows on your face, less weigh after 40’s will also increase facial expression marks. That’s also something to consider. I like you the way you look on the hairy pics.

  • Zorajae

I’m gonna have to add my voice here, because I feel so strongly about it – I much prefer hair on the chest, and in areas where it grows naturally!  That is….on a man!  lol

I wouldn’t worry so much about it – like the other ladies here, I find that it’s sexy, but also that it is entirely about how YOU feel about it.  All the best!  🙂

    Joey

I’ve done laser hair removal and it is by far the best way to get rid of unwanted hair.
I think you should try it. It is not painless but it is far more effective than shaving or waxing. I’d just say make sure u go to a place that’s reputable. I go to a place here in Texas called ‘Clarify’ (formerly Smooth Solutions’) and there are a lot of men I’ve seen to in for laser hair removal. On another note I just purchased the ‘unleash your thin’ package as well and looking forward to starting that. Thanks Joey

You got it Sanflorelo! The Florida heat does NOT feel good on a body with lots of body hair – and I spend a lot of time outdoors. And it does cover the actual finer details of the physique – so a double bonus when it’s gone during the hot months.

Thanks for the compliments! – very kind.

Good info Amanda – ill do my homework on the laser topic 🙂
    thx!

Hi Zorajae – I hear ya – but besides the heat in Florida and the ‘look’ of the finer physique details… The upper body hair is a nuisance when putting on sunscreen – and it’s a pain in the butt when getting massage therapy. Less hair allows the therapist to do a better job – and hurts me less!

    Thanks for posting!

Hi Ld – great info on the laser option – ill be doing my research on it here – so many places offer it! Glad you snatched up the UYT package – LOTS of good material in there.

    Keep me posted!

You’re correct Lynn – the physique is what matters… (also mindset and internal health) – but for reasons I mention below – it just makes Summer life more enjoyable and ‘smoother’ when it’s off, lol no pun intended…

    Thx!
    Joey

    Wow –
lots of kind compliments Hanna – thanks! My bodyfat will only drop a few %
-and I really don’t even try – it just happens as the temps rise and my
activity options and levels shift… More info to come on specifics in
    future posts…

    Stay tuned!

  • georgina

Thank you Joey for all the very interesting material you keep sending!
There is a treatment called “luz pulsada” (could not translate it) which is painless and effective for hair removal.  But who cares about it in that superb torso? Including the crazy swirls.. lol.

  • Anonymous

Ya welcome! …thanks for the comps – much appreciated. thanks for the hair removal info georgina 🙂

    Joey

  • Acabarbie

Why would ANY man in his right mind remove his body hair when it is his
    biggest sex appeal?
A man with a hairless body does not attract me in the least!
I’d go for a hairy man even if he’s not super fit and not with a super
fit one if he has no hair!

  • Aprilchez

Joey try the no no. I used the tria good results. Heard no no is better. You will be cooler in the summer

  • Anonymous

Hi April – where can I get the nono? What is it?

    -J

  • Gingerkat00

THANK YOU! For being real! I have enjoyed your emails and blogs for yearsand I have learned quite a bit. This may be the best yet! Thank you for reaching all of us on one level or another (or several)!

  • Anonymous

I do leave it on my forearms.. And my legs & glutes too – I don’t take it off there – it’s light and softer there – and ok in the hot summer sun.

  • Anonymous

REALLY?? ..the best yet? wow.. cool – tell me more – why would you say this is one of the best yet? You must have read a bunch over the last few years! 🙂

    THX!

  • Kgendry

    Hi Joey,
I think the only problem you would find with the laser hair removal is that it is intended to be permanent (if you’ve endured waxing I’m sure you can cope with the warm tingle that this technique provides).  This would mean an end (possibly) to the winter coat 🙁 and you’d probably need an extra couple of layers of clothes to make up for it.  Definately something to consider!  I agree with your comment about it being more comfortable off in summer.  I always used to love snuggling up with my ex (before he was my ex) on winter evening because, like you, he had a built in blanket, but summer was a different story.
    Hope that insight helps 🙂
    Stay awesome!
    Krystal

  • Anonymous

Good stuff, Krystal – thanks for posting, helps a lot! I’m ok with the ‘permanent’ idea – as it doesn’t get too cold here in north FL (not like in snowy NY!) – and I’m good with layering when needed. It’s a positive trade-off for sure.

    You stay awesome too!
    Joey

  • Kat

Oh Joey, You’re “Hot Stuff” no matter what you do! 😉

  • Anonymous

Too kind, Kat – but I thank you!

    Joey

  • Jacarandaj7

Have you thought of sugaring? It’s very gentle and hair regrowth lessens and ceases over time.

  • Jucyfiggy

I love men with hairy chests….Mine has same but he also does shave that off in the hot climate and that is when i miss all that hair as i love playing with that..

  • Anonymous

Hmm – sugaring – never hear of it. If you can find an article on it and post the link here that would be great.
    thx!
    Joey

  • CHARLIE

ALOHA AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING ABOUT WINTER WEIGHT.  I AM 72 YEARS YOUNG AND 5’8″ AND CONSIDER 127LBS MY IDEAL WEIGHT BUT HAVE ALWAYS SHOT UP ABOUT 5 LBS DURING THE WINTER AND MENTALLY PUNISH MYSELF FOR THE GAIN SO TO HEAR YOUR COMMENTS HELPS PUT MY MIND AT EASE.
    MUCH JOY,
    CHARLIE

     You got it Charlie!

    Joey

  • Trashanda

    lol.

  • Weefoot

I have never understood why ANYONE would choose waxing when there are alternatives–it’s simply primitive! IPL (intense pulsed light) laser treatment–or anything similar–will give you VERY good results without pain. If you find you have a particularly low pain threshold, use a bit of numbing cream (Emla, etc.) before treatment–but my aesthetician just put a thick layer of a cold gel on the surface to be treated, and I found no more than a slight, quick stinging sensation. If you do want to get rid of body hair, permanently, that’s definitely the way to go, in my opinion. 🙂

  • Monica

I can’t wait to see the after pictures. Not that there is anything wrong with the before      pictures.

  • Jill

    Agree!  Joey, you look marvelous!
